Participants had identified their best leaders from a wide variety of work, sports,
and personal settings. As each characteristic was identified, it was entered on one of
seven large, unlabeled sheets of paper taped to the wall. Unbeknown to the
participants, each of the sheets of paper represented one of the elements of the full
range of leadership model, ranging from laissez faire to management by exception, to
contingent reward, to the four I’s of transformational leadership. A facilitator familiar
with the model placed each identified attribute on the appropriate (unlabeled) sheet.
When the group had exhausted its lists of attributes, the facilitator revealed the logic
by which he had placed the attributes on the unlabeled sheets. The facilitator began by
boldly labeling each sheet with the element of the full-range model it represented, and
provided a description and examples of that type of leadership.
