In contrast with Britain, other climatic zones of the world may have
much more developed lithoseres. Mediterranean cliffs and flat rocks
often have a much greater profusion of plant life, given the range of
drought-adapted plants to be found within that climatic zone. Many
Mediterranean islands support dense maquis or garrigue secondary
vegetation made up of a wide range of bushes and shrubs. In tropical
areas, as mentioned in an earlier chapter, cliff faces frequently support
dense vegetation right down to the water's edge.
