Secoiridoids, iridoids and xanthones are the main active constituents
of the Gentian plant, but the secoiridoids (gentiopicroside,
amarogentin, swertiamarin and sweroside) are the most important
because they are responsible for the bitter taste of the plant and
bring about a reflex excitation of the taste receptors that increases
secretion of saliva and digestive juices and consequently stimulates
the appetite and improves digestion
