Police said the 29-year-old charged with murder was from Manurewa, south Auckland, and would appear in Auckland District Court on Saturday.
They were not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.
The incident took place at an international school on Queen St.
The dead woman is understood to be an IT student from India and the arrested man was also understood to be from there.
"She was a good student," a staff member said, "a brilliant student. She was studying IT. She had finished her first year and had enrolled for her second year."
A woman from the building said she heard three people arguing heatedly on the first floor of the building, before getting in the lift and heading to the second floor, where the assaults allegedly took place.
Not long after, having been alerted to the incident, she travelled up in the lift herself and saw the woman prone in the hallway just outside the lift.
"There was lots of blood," she said. "She was unconscious. I think she was dying."
"When the lift opened we just saw the woman. She was lying down on the floor with the knife [nearby]."
She called the victim a good student, and believed students had held the attacker until police arrived and arrested him.
Other witnesses who were in the street described a shocking scene with two patients covered in blood.
A staff member at the school, who did not want to be named, said he had seen the alleged killer at the school before the attack.
He had arrived and waited for the woman, who was sitting an exam.
Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Newman said police received the call at 12.35pm and found three people injured at the scene.
The woman died, while a man received moderate injuries and the other minor injuries.
"It's a situation we are trying to get to the bottom of. We're just at the start of it."
He wasn't in a position to discuss the relationships of the three people involved to each another.
Alex Waqatabu and Cece Akauola, both 18-year-old students, were in class at Taylor's College when they saw ambulances and police arrive.
The pair rushed downstairs to the crime scene, which is directly opposite their college.
"I could see one of the people on the ambulance bed had been stabbed in the side," Waqatabu said.
"There was a lot of blood. It was a shock to see."
Akauola said a crowd of onlookers quickly formed.
She said people were unclear what had happened and were frightened.
"I didn't know what had happened, we hadn't heard anything.
"I was worried the person that did it was still there."
Newman said the woman's body had since been removed from the scene and a post-mortem examination was scheduled to get under way on Saturday.
Police were working through the process of formal identification and contacting her family. Once formal identification processes had been carried out police would release the victim's name, Newman said.
St Johns said three ambulances attended the incident.
