which is based on the exergy concept. The exergy
of a resource is defined as the maximum amount of useful work
that can be retrieved from this resource when bringing it into
equilibrium through reversible processes with the natural environment
(Szargut et al., 1988; Wall, 1977). The CEENE method can
be considered as a further development of the work of Szargut et al.
(1988) and the work of Bösch et al. (2007). Szargut et al. (1988)
proposed the Cumulative Exergy Consumption (CExC) concept,
that extended exergy analysis beyond a single process to life cycle
level. The work of Bösch et al. (2007) operationalized the exergy
concept in LCA by developing an impact category, the Cumulative
Exergy Demand (CExD). In its turn, the CEENE method improved
the CExD method by accounting for land occupation. In addition to
the quantification of the resource use throughout the Pangasius
cradle to farm gate life cycle, an exergetic efficiency analysis at life
cycle level and at process level (feed mill, hatchery and farm) is
performed to identify opportunities for improvement.
