Por Tor Festival, a celebration of 'hungry ghosts' by Phuket's Chinese community. It is believed that at the start of the seventh Chinese lunar month, the ghosts of ancestors are released from the spirit world back into their earthly homes. The wandering ghosts offer a chance for descendants to show their gratitude to their forebears by 'feeding' them treats and paper money.
Many homes around the island are abuzz with feasts and festivities and many gather at Chinese shrines around the island, particularly the Por Tor Kong Shrine near Saphan Hin in Phuket City, to make merit and watch theatre performances based on the Por Tor legends. Beautifully designed red turtle cakes, considered to represent longevity, are sold at several local shops
