Within a given society the groups or institutions with which the growing child is intimately involved vary in their justice structures. A public school that the child is forced to attend under compulsory education laws is different from a university that the youth attends voluntarily. A neighborhood play group is different from a reformatory. A girl scout troop differs from a family. A family dominated by an autocratic father differs from one in which children are encouraged to make decisions , take responsibility, and be rewarded in accordance with how they carry out their self-imposed commitments.
