Biopolymers fulfill the environmental concerns but they show some limitations in terms of performance like thermal resistance, barrier and mechanical properties, associated with the costs. Then, this kind of packaging materials needs more research, more added value like the introduction of smart and intelligent molecules (which is the nanotechnology field) able to give information about the properties of the food inside the package (quality, shelf-life, microbiological safety) and nutritional values. It is necessary to make researches on this kind of material to enhance barrier properties, to ensure food properties integrity, to incorporate intelligent labeling, to give to the consumer the possibility to have more detailed product information than the current system.
