Not everyone can implement JIT manufacturing, and doing so requires a high degree of organization in the company. A larger inventory buffers companies from sudden changes in the market such as strikes, demand fluctuations, interrupted supplies, communication outages, and other unforeseen interruptions. Because JIT minimizes the amount of inventory, a breakdown in the supply chain can cause the company to run out of components and hold up the rest of the production process. JIT is more suited to mass-produced and highly automated production systems that rely on frequent updates in inventory. JIT manufacturers also need reliable suppliers and excellent communications with suppliers so that inventories can be restocked at the pace demanded by JIT.
