ner and the amount of information that they had expected to receive
from the use of this technique. Nonverbal encouragement items asked
individuals to report how frequently they had used nonverbal behav-
iors to encourage their partner to continue talking about a topic and
how frequently they had used nonverbal behaviors to discourage
such continued talk.
