Lesson VOC 64
Task: Set table for others.
Prerequisites: ADT 23, COG 20, COG 41, VOC 5
Concept: This is simply an extension of setting a table in a home environment (see prerequisite ADT 23). The main difference is that a work setting such as a restaurant may have specific requirements for how a table should be set. In a work setting, the most teachable moment for this activity is immediately following the busing of a table (see VOC 63). In addition, the supervisor may have specific requirements for the number of settings, which may vary. For this reason, basic counting (see prerequisite COG 41) is also useful.
Behavioral Objective: When requested by a "supervisor" to set up a table for a specific number of people (one to four), the student will place all the required utensils, dishes, napkins, and glasses on the table to a 90% accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: At least four sets of utensils, dishes, napkins, and glasses; a practice table; poster board; and markers.
Task Analysis:
1. Inquire of a real or potential workplace as to what specific arrangement is used for setting a table. The student should be present so that he or she can witness the intended outcome.
2. Using the poster board and markers, draw outline templates of each item to be placed on the table, put them in the proper position on the practice table, and use the student's abilities to match shapes (see prerequisite COG 20) to assist in placing the items on the templates. This setup should be for four places.
3. Continue Step 2, slowly reducing the use of visual templates and replacing them with step-by-step verbal prompting.
4. Continue Step 3, modifying the step-by-step verbal prompting to a total-task request for four settings.
5. Modify Step 4 to randomly request different numbers of settings at the table, from one to four.
