Blau (1984) was an early paper to look at differences in welfare reliance of
immigrants and natives within the US, finding immigrant-headed households in the
US less likely to be dependent on cash transfers than natives, conditional on
characteristics. Borjas and Trejo (1991) show that the likelihood of welfare use
nonetheless increases the longer the immigrant stays and is higher for more recent
immigrant cohorts, while Borjas and Hilton (1996) suggest that relative welfare
dependency of migrants looks less favourable if a broader set of benefits is considered.
