From young, my dad had liked music. I grew up listening to music freely and gaining interests in it. The singers I really look up to are Lauryn Hill from the Fugees and Madonna. I see them as historical female musicians. (MyDaily, Jul 17, 2009)
I think of this as my last resort. Back then I was thinking if this does not work, I’ll just have to try something else. I heard that to be able to meet Yang Hyun Seok you have to wait everyday at the company building and even have to stay overnight there. And to prepare my demo tape, I had put in a lot of practice and it was one of the most hardworking times of my life. I think of it and without fear I went for the challenge. I hope that is not the time when my passion is burning the highest. (MyDaily, July 17, 2009)
The musicians I prefer are Lauren Hill and Madonna. Although the two have quite contrasting feelings to them. The two, as females, are strong musicians, and they don’t follow the path that guys have gone down before. They’re musicians that will leave behind their colours and remain in history. My own philosophy, as, well, like Madonna, is to be strong, in a single word, icon.
I want to be like someone who will show off her own charms and yet not force it out too strongly on stage. You can simply just see her existence on stage. (July 2009)
Even though it is still no up to satisfaction, with all the musical inspirations I get and accumulate, I hope to show to everyone the music I make one day. (July 2009)
I’m completely cold and warm, and change from an angel to a devil. It’s just like how CL and Chaerin are clearly different, but both are me.
People say there are limits, but honestly, I think I don’t have that. It’s just that people don’t do anything about it. I want to show people a performance that will make them think, “She can even do this.”
As a singer, I’m a novice. There are still too many things to experience. But I try not to think of this work as a job. I don’t listen to a lot of music and practice singing because I’m a singer. Because I like to sing and dance, I am a singer. If the time comes and I feel that this work has simply become a job, I think I’d quit without regret. There’s no reason to do this work if there’s no fun in it. “Having fun while working” is really important to me.
I just want to live while doing work that has meaning. Work that has meaning to me, not to others. Because at the moment, it’s dancing and singing, I am doing this work.
Right now, there are only 4 people that I can say are my friends. Truthfully, even if I have only one friend my entire life, that would be enough. Whether that’s my husband or boyfriend, I’d like it to be someone that I love.
I really like people. I have a large family and I like people crowding around me. However, I’m most comfortable when I’m the only one in that person’s heart. I don’t like being alone in a desert, but I like being alone in a big city. (Vogue girl, July 19, 2010)
I’m a workaholic and not good at relaxing. Even if I had a holiday, I’d probably go to the gym and exercise If it was a long holiday, I’d want to go travelling. I want to go to a place that doesn’t know about me.
My personality is always black and white. It’s never in the middle.”
My father often listened to Lauryn Hill so when I was singing along while listening to it, there was a moment where I thought “singing is fun!” It was when I was about 10 years old.
I wrote one line in “UGLY”. The part that goes “The world is full of lies”
We want to be an icon instead of being an idol. Since presenting good music to the public is the job of a singer, we want to give hope to the ones who are working for their dreams. We want to be that confident icon that represents women
There is no such thing as the ‘2NE1 style.’ We’re not a group that will stick to one color. Predictability and normalcy; it’s all so boring, isn’t it? We will never stop reinventing ourselves; we’ll always be the group with no boundaries, no limits and no answers.
Music has no language barrier. It’s just music, you could just listen to it and feel it. When you’re on stage, you connect to it. It doesn’t matter if it’s in Korean, or in English. It’s just a matter of what we show and inspire.
We’re different, but not wrong.
The difference between K-Pop and Pop is just the language, music has the power to break down any walls.
Blackjacks are like family and like friends.
I want to be a singer-songwriter, who writes different kinds of music, I don’t want to be restricted to one kind of music only, and want to make songs that cover a variety of concepts that different people could like.
I’m childish, that’s my charm. I’m fearless, that’s my youth.
When life gets rough, turn to music! When you can find lyrics you can empathize with and some music you can really feel, I guarantee it can be a big help to you.
In 30 years, I hope that we age along with our music. We may be walking separate paths, but I’d love it if we could get together once in a while and ho
