Interviews with teachers and students revealed the undeniable importance of Literature as a subject in secondary school. Many participants noted that the subject encourages the development of higher order thinking and creativity. The findings also showed that that the vision and mission of the school and its performance in the School Achievement Table (MOE, 2006) have an impact on the degree of importance students placed on the subject. Students in the high performing schools were more receptive to Literature studies and this was reflected in their positive feedback and points of view.
