Teacher should assist children to use language (words and sentences) as well as the voice (volume, pitch, speed) and non-verbal language (eye-contact,facial expression, gestures) in a way that provides for clear and meaningful oral communication. An ideal way of doing this is to model the telling of news themselves. Children learn from seeing and hearing good language models. Another useful teacher support is the use of explicit feedback. Teachers should regularly indicate to children the different positive features they demonstrated when telling their news. This might be streamlined by having a specific speaking and listening goal for the week (for example,'This week we are going to concentrate on using a voice that everyone can hear') and focusing feedback on this aspect.
