Our Film Studies community is dynamic and vibrant. Cinema was undoubtedly the most exciting art form to emerge in the 20th century. Now, at the beginning of the 21st century, film is surrounded and challenged by an array of new media. Film Studies offers the critical, historical, and theoretical tools needed to understand and appreciate the creative potential of cinematic and electronic images and to assess critically how they mediate our experience of the world.
In addition to inspiring lectures, seminars and dissertation supervision, we offer enviable student support through our tutorial system. We ensure that there are highly effective channels of communication between students, teaching as well as administrative staff in order that we can provide the best possible experience. Our graduates go into a range of careers or choose to pursue further study and research.
There are social events throughout the year and our resident Film Society organise weekly film screenings, networking opportunities for film-makers as well as social outings. We also run frequent events with some of our partners including the BFI Southbank, the leading national institute for film.
The Department has enviable facilities including two dedicated, fully-equipped (DVD/VHS projection) lecture-seminar rooms, a large film theatre with 35mm/Betacam SP/Blu-ray projection, and a huge collection of print, DVD and VHS materials in the Maughan Library.
