Moth camouflage. A Lappet moth Gastropacha quercifolia mimickin an oak leaf. Seen at centre, perched on an oak twig, this Lappet moth maintains the correct posture to resemble a dead curled leaf. Its behaviour is to remain still. The wing shape and reddish-brown body colour accurately mimic the oak leaves around it. In this way, by blending in with its enviroment, the lappet moth gains protection against predators. Gastropacha quercifolia lives in dry woodland, with adults appearing in July to August. It is distributed widely from Europe to the Far East.
