However, a well-planned diet can go a long way in providing your baby with all the nourishment needed for the first six months of life—and you, with the energy and sustenance needed to get through it all.
Nutritionist Lee Holmes spoke with ninemsn COACH about the importance of fuelling your body with the right nutrients during this physically demanding time.
"Because breastfeeding uses a lot of energy and nutrients, getting adequate amounts of dietary nutrients is really important," Holmes says.
"Some of the most important nutrients, vitamins and minerals needed during this time are protein, calcium, iron and folate."
