The basic idea behind the weighting scheme (2) is that observations that are close to each other on the
ground tend to be more alike than those further apart, hence observations closer to u should receive a larger
weight. Instead of the Euclidian distance, geostatistics uses the semivariogram as a measure of dissimilarity
between observations.
