As in the classic LEGO system, the basic building block in the
Technic system is the brick: that easy-to-connect piece that
we all know and love. But, as shown in Figure 2-3, Technic
bricks are a little different. They have hollow studs, which
make them harder to separate and better suited for heavy duty use. Most Technic bricks also have pin holes centered between the studs: a 1×2 brick has one hole, a 1×4 brick has
three holes, and so on. The holes in Technic pieces are vital
to the LEGO Technic building system, as they allow you to
connect pieces with pins or run axles through them.
Although the holes in most Technic bricks are centered
between the studs, you will find variants of 1×1 and 1×2
Technic bricks that have holes aligned with the studs—for
example, see Figure 2-4. When the studs are aligned with
the holes, the number of holes and studs is equal. Such an
arrangement is useful for compact building with densely
packed pins and axles, and these pieces can also be used to
align pieces by half of a stud.
