This sixth edition discusses practical guidelines and the theory and implications of theories for the practice of therapeutic recreation. The book consists of 10 chapters. Chapter 1 provides a brief overview and discusses the book's major concepts, purpose and its organization. Chapter 2 discusses the five major theories of helping that apply to intervention and counselling programmes in the wide range of settings in which therapeutic recreation services are delivered. Chapter 3 discusses techniques that may be used by recreational therapists. Chapter 4 discusses the therapeutic recreation process. Chapter 5 contains information on professional ethics, cultural diversity and burnout as concerns for professional helpers. Chapter 6 discusses the communication processes between recreational therapists and their clients. Chapter 7 discusses the application of leadership in therapeutic recreation. Chapter 8 offers information on a number of leadership tasks and concerns of recreational therapists. Chapter 9 introduces clinical supervision and examines the actual rules and functions of the supervisor and supervisee. Chapter 10 presents health and safety information to be considered when providing services for clients who have a seizure disorder, who are receiving medication for diabetes mellitus or who are being treated with psychotropic drugs. This book was written to enhance the technical abilities of therapeutic recreation students and clinicians.
