In contrast, a figurative painter approaches the world from a subjective viewpoint and interrogates the particularities of a scene in order to capture an overall impression. For painters such as Jeffrey Smart lighting, shading and shadows are the inspiration and the primary focus of their work. “Anything, I can find beautiful. But always it’s always the light I think. I don’t think it’s the object itself” [1]. Smart’s focus is on context dependant qualities, i.e. transitional, temporary effects of “the light”, above the context independent qualities, i.e. stable, enduring qualities inherent to “the object itself”. The inspiration and focus that Smart describes is common amongst figurative painters.
