The effects of several parameters on the yields and properties
of BCO obtained from EFB by hydro-/solvothermolysis were
studied. The highest yields of phenol and guaiacol were obtained
at 350 ◦C, while the highest yields of catechol and syringol were
obtained at 400 ◦C. The inorganic matter in EFB can act as a
base catalyst to enhance the yield of BCO and monomeric compounds.
The water-to-ethanol ratio was the dominant factor which
affected the composition of BCO. Catechol was the most abundant
compound during the hydrothermolysis process, and the
addition of ethanol enhanced the yields of phenol and guaiacol
significantly.
