Father’s Day in Thailand is very special because it is the King’s birthday. Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej was born on Monday December 5th, 1927. In Thailand, different days of the week has a color that coincides with it. Monday is yellow, Tuesday is pink, Wednesday is green, etc. Traditionally, it is believed that wearing clothes or wearing items that corresponds with the color of the day will bring good luck. Because the King was born on a Monday, yellow becomes associated with the color of royalty. On the King’s birthday, people are encouraged to wear yellow as a sign of unity and respect. You will see many people wearing a yellow polo shirt on this day. There will be all sorts of celebrations from singing songs in praise of the King, making merits to monks in honor of the King, and at night there will be spectacular firework performance and candle lighting ceremony. Streets and many shopping complex will be decorated in strings of tiny lights and picture of the King will be displayed at the entrance of the building. December the 5th is for celebrating the King’s birthday who is looked upon as the Father of the nation. It is a perfect day to also acknowledge all the other fathers in the country, making it the national Father's Day. Father’s Day in Thailand is considered one of the most important celebrations in the country. Canna flowers (dok puta-raksa in Thai) is the flower used for Father's Day.
Family is very important in the Thai society. For Father’s Day, families usually go eat out together. Many restaurants will be especially packed on this day.
