Final diagnosis
Tissue from sella, transsphenoidal removal :
- Presence of portion of cyst lined by non-keratinizing squamous epithelium, cholesterol crystal and amorphous cosinophilic material
- Few pieces of anterior pituitary tissue with crush artifact
Comment : differential diagnosis includes rathke eleft cyst or cystic craniopharyngioma. However, diagnostic tissue of craniopharyngioma is not present(e.g. wetkeratin); correlation with imaging study is suggested.
Gross description
The specimen is received in formalin,labeled with the patient’s name, additional labeling “sellar mass” and a surgical number. It consists of multiple pieces of irregular soft gray white tissue. Measuring 2x1.5x0.3 cm. in aggregate. Entirely submitted (1 block,multiple)
