H.E. Mr. Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations, and Madame Nane Annan will pay an Official Visit to the Kingdom of Thailand as guests of the Royal Thai Government between 25th and 27th May 2006, to present to His Majesty the King of Thailand the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)’s Human Development Lifetime Achievement Award, in recognition of His Majesty’s dedication and life-long works in contribution to the development and better livelihood of the Thai people.
This United Nations distinction will be presented to His Majesty the King of Thailand for his extraordinary contribution to human development, on the occasion of the Celebration of the 60th Anniversary of His Majesty the King’s Accession to the Throne. This year is the first time that such a special lifetime achievement award is initiated, and His Majesty the King of Thailand will be the first recipient to receive the newly-created distinction.
In the past, His Majesty the King received many awards and other forms of distinction from representatives of various organizations and agencies under the United Nations, for example the Gold Medal from the World Health Organization (WHO) in recognition of His Majesty's leadership and example in public health, and the Agricola Medal from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in recognition of His Majesty’s devotion to the well-being and happiness of the people of Thailand, particularly those in agriculture sectors. However, this will be the first time that the United Nations Secretary-General himself is coming to Thailand to present the Award.
During the visit, His Majesty the King of Thailand will graciously receive the United Nations Secretary-General and Madame Annan in audience, at Klai Kangwon Palace, Hua Hin District, Prachuab Kirikhan Province, on 26 May, 2006, at 1700 hrs. Furthermore, the Secretary-General is scheduled to give a speech at the Panel Discussion on ‘His Majesty the King and Human Development’, to be held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on 26 May, 2006 at 09.30 hrs. Afterward on the same day, H.E. Police Lieutenant Colonel Thaksin Shinawatra, Prime Minister, will hold bilateral talks with the United Nations Secretary-General and will host an official luncheon in honour of the Secretary-General at the Government House.
This visit to Thailand of the Secretary-General, will not only greatly contribute to the celebration on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of His Majesty the King’s Accession to the Throne, but will also strengthen the existing cooperation between Thailand and the United Nations.
