However, a model in terms only of rate of progress implies that a current rate that is acceptable in relation to s standard speed generates no feelings, however large is a person’s distance from a goal. (See the quotations in the previous paragraphs.) That is improbable, and in fact both distance from a goal and speed of discrepancy reduction have been shown to be influential (e.g., Bandura & Locke, 2003). The two comparisons should therefore be included in J3A. Perceptions of progress velocity relative to a speed standard (as in Carver and Scheier’s model) can be important for employee well-being in some conditions, but also important is the perceived magnitude of a goal discrepancy.
