Check if you’re eligible for Child Tax Credit
Before you apply for Child Tax Credit you should check you’re eligible.
You must make a joint claim with your partner if you live together as a couple or you’re married (unless you’re permanently separated).
To get Child Tax Credit your income must be below a certain level. The exact level depends on your circumstances - it can be around £26,000 for a family with one child, but it could be higher if you pay for childcare, or you or your partner is disabled.
If you make a joint claim HMRC will add your incomes together.
You could get Child Tax Credit for each child or young person you’re responsible for, as long as one of the following applies:
they’re under the age of 16
they’re up to the age of 20 and in full-time education up to A level or equivalent, or on an approved training course, or on a 16 to19 study programme (or they’ve been accepted on one of these courses but haven’t started yet)
they’re aged under 18, they left school within the last 20 weeks and they’ve registered with the Careers Service
