Data collection
In recognition of the multi-staged experience of the reproductive
trajectory, a prospective repeat interview model was used,
with interview schedules chosen to mirror the period of transition
from reproductive decision-making through to parenthood
(Miller, 2000). The total number of interviews with each woman
was negotiated on an individual basis and was influenced by the
timing of the first interview. The timing of the first interview
depended on whether diagnosis of HIV occurred in advance of
pregnancy or during antenatal screening, but the endpoint for
interviews was always in the postnatal period, approximately
6–8 weeks after the birth of the child. Table 1 provides information
on the number of interviews conducted with each woman
