The worker's use of self is a major tool in the helping endeavor. Some of the characteristics of the helping person are concern for other, acceptance of others, warmth, supportiveness, and maturity. The helping professional person is one who is grounded in a knowledge base and who use a professional code of ethics as a guide to the helping endeavor. Good judgment also is very important factor. The helping person needs to develop skills for understanding client and their situation, for creating a climate that encourages interaction, for acting on the client's problems, and for communicating with and relating to others. The social worker also needs to develop a degree of comfort with the authority and responsibility that are inherent in the professional helping roles. Sometimes more than one person or worker needs to be in endeavor in the helping situation. This may take a from of consultation, referral, or collaboration. Functioning in a team situation is an important skills for social workers. Teams take many forms: sometimes they are made up of person from different professions, sometimes of social workers from a variety of agencies or with a variety of skills. Regardless of the type of team, functioning with others in a cooperative, collaborative manner is imperative.
