effect of the forward velocity of a struck ship turned to be quite remarkable when the
slender bulbous bow is stiffened with vertical ring frames in lieu of longitudinals
(refer to proposals by Woisin [10]). In this case, no rupture is expected even in the
side shell of a struck double hull VLCC.
According to the results of a series of collision FEA, the critical collision angle is
ranging from about 601(from behind) to 1501(head-on) in the case that a 6200TEU
containership collides with an advancing INF ship. The degree of the bow bending is
found to be non-linear function of the colliding velocity. Fig. 17 shows the damages
to both ships in the case of a border collision angle (1501). The expected sliding
length reaches about one hold length.
