In this paper, we focus on the integrated forest
companies and their choice for paying employees
for in-house performance of silvicultural activities. Intriguingly, forest companies in BC, many
of which are well established, use time rates as
well as piece wages to pay silvicultural crews.
They rely on piece rates considerably less than do
. the silvicultural contractors (see Table 1) , because
the greater scope of silvicultural activities that the
companies undertake enables the use of a variety
of payment methods to lower transaction costs. In
this study, we use the results of a survey of forest
companies to develop insights into the factors
that determine the choice of a payment scheme
for workers performing silvicultural activities.
