The second generation of statistics packages started appearing in the 1980’s,
with the breakthrough of the personal computer. Both Data Desk (1985)
and JMP (1989) were, from the start, written for Macintosh, i.e. for the
WIMP interface. They had no mainframe heritage and baggage. As a consequence
they had a much stronger emphasis on graphics, visualization, and
exploratory data analysis.
