From the finding, it could be seen that the students often used the Internet
as an information resource means for their studies due to the Internet’s vast array of materials and data in any fields. As mentioned before, the more the students used the Internet, the more they could develop or improve their English proficiency,if used with healthy directions and purposes. Thus, the level of the Internet use of the students was an interesting factor that might affect the relationship between the Internet use and English proficiency. In Aungkanawin’s study (2003), the finding showed that after learning to use the Internet, students gained more
knowledge. Regarding the Internet application (Table 6), the overall students often used the Internet for online entertainment, search engine, and portal web respectively. This showed that the students were familiar with navigating their ways through the Internet for required information and news; and showed the tendency to improve their English proficiency as many of the websites of the Internet are English-based. By monitoring and exchanging news, and discussing opinions on the Internet, the students increased their knowledge in current affairs, which was beneficial for their studies and their social lives because information on the
Internet requires understanding of the English language. Familiarity with English sentence structures, vocabulary, and expressions will benefit students as they can come to recognize vocabulary and its contexts within certain sentence and
expressions.
