In the late 19th and early 20th century’s windmill sales boomed and windmill lore
was widespread. Many well drillers in rural areas around the globe also sold and
installed windmills. The purchase prices they quoted normally included set-up costs.
Telling a buyer what size mill to buy and where to put it was a matter of drawing on
the rule of the thumb knowledge plus a considerable store of vernacular wisdom
about local water availability and wind conditions. Wind characteristics are
important in all stages of wind energy system development, including system design,
sitting, performance evaluation, and operation. Also the economical considerations
of utilizing the wind energy for water pumping are the most important aspect in
selecting the proper technology to be used in any project and location. When
technical test data are interpreted properly to represent the economical value of these
technologies; the proper utilization and location of such systems can be obtained to
optimize their operation
