Bangkok’s massive growth, especially during the past five decades has created many problems. As more and more migrants flock to the city, it has grown organically from its central core into a metropolitan region with more than ten million people. Political jurisdictional precedents have negated any hope for easy urban planning solutions. Various political factions and their pressure groups are continuously hanging on to control over previously granted jurisdictions, including the granting of mass-transit networks and utilities such as telecommunications.
As a result, Bangkok and its metropolitan areas are expanding rapidly with little semblance of comprehensive urban planning that will ensure a good and sustainable quality of life for its citizens.
