UHPE can result in disruption of bamboo microbial cells and
destruction of recalcitrant plant cell wall polymers. The mechanism
may include cavitations, turbulence, impingement and shear
stress. The results showed an obvious difference of particle size
distribution between the non-UHPE and UHPE-treated samples. It
is interesting to note that average particle size reduction by UHPE
for bamboo shoots, 2- and 5-year-old bamboo were without significantly
difference. It was exactly similar with other biomass after
pretreatment (Jin et al., 2015; Chen et al., 2010), which can be seen
that one of UHPE-treated consequences is to reduce the particle
size of cellulose materials. The particle width distribution of samples
became remarkably larger with the increase of the bamboo
ages. The particle size width distribution of bamboo shoots samples
became remarkably smaller than 2- and 5-year-old bamboo
(Fig. 1).
