One study examined perceptual and physiological heat strain during exercise in
both highly trained endurance and untrained individuals. The results of this study
indicated that endurance trained individuals underestimated their perceptions in
accordance with their heart rate and core temperature values. However, the untrained
individuals perceived physiological strain in accordance with their heart rate and core
temperature values (Tikuisis, McLellan, and Selkirk, 2002). Though these findings may
indicate that endurance trained athletes may be at risk, it could also indicate they may be
able to tolerate a higher physiological strain.
