There are two types of complimentaries: hard comps and soft comps. Hard comps are those that require the casino department to pay an outside vendor for services the vendor has performed for the customer. This includes reimbursement for airfare, use of an outside limousine service, ticketing for an event at another casino, and gifts such as cars and jewelry. The term hard comp derives from the fact that the casino must pay for the service in "cold, hard cash." Some of the hard comps that have been granted include allowing a player and his wife to select his-and-hers matching Mercedes-Benz cars from a lo- cal dealership, an around-the-world cruise as a birthday present, and, in the case of one player with a $7 million line of credit, fresh rasp- berries in his room regardless of the time of year.
