The ideal of a safe, warm, caring and unbiased environment is only achieved with the participation and cooperation of everyone. Establishing this kind of culture will allow the children to develop their character and personality with calm and orderly, self-assured independence. Montessori described this form of functioning as “normalization” and set it as a state to strive for. The challenge for the educator is that they must consistently teach the children to live within the guidelines of this kind of environment in a positive way. The lessons of grace and courtesy are a beginning in this peaceful process.
