Kiku-Masamune Sake Brewing Co., Ltd, Japan
Ancient Company Profits from State-of-the-Art Business Intelligence System
The Kano family began brewing sake in the small town of Mikage, Kobe, Japan, in 1659. The sake wine that they brewed, named Kiku-Masamune—translated as chrysanthemum sake—became a staple in Japan. Over the centuries it has played an important role in Japanese culture and religion. In 1877, Kiku-Masamune became a global commodity when the company began exporting to England. Today, Kiku-Masamune sake is exported to many countries, and until recently it enjoyed a monopoly position in the sake market.
In the mid-1990s, U.S. sales for Kiku-Masamune sky-rocketed when sushi became the latest dining rage. With sushi bars opening nearly everywhere, the sake once described as "moonlight steeped in spring rain" enjoyed unprecedented sales. The company took advantage of its competitive position and began educating U.S. consumers through sake seminars in Los Angeles and New York City. The attention drawn to sake and its leading producer, Kiku-Masamune, did not go unnoticed by some ambitious entrepreneurs.
Competition in the sake industry increased both within Japan and around the world. Also, the Japanese were beginning to favor other alcoholic beverages imported from the West. With competition from an estimated 1,700 Japanese sake breweries and a dwindling client base, Kiku-Masamune was losing business both at home and abroad. The company knew it could no longer rely solely on tradition and quality. It needed to learn more about the market—and its customers, But Kiku-Masamune had one big advantage over newcomers: its experience. The key to using its expertise lay in the millions of records it had collected over its long business history .
The company’s paper-based record store was huge, with files on over 1.9 million vendors, 300,000 expense records, both of which were increasing by 100,000 records each year. Kiku-Masamune was in dire need of an electronic system that could manage these records and provide up-to-the-minute reports on the condition of the company, its suppliers, and customers. As Keiji Fukuda, systems manager in the company's accounting department observes, “Of course, if we'd been prepared to spend all our time trying to unearth crucial data, we could have continued indefinitely with our paper-based operations. But what if somebody needed to look at a document submitted several years ago? We simply didn't have the tools to meet those kinds of demands.”
Kiku-Masamune contracted with a U.S. system developer to design an information and decision support system customized for the company’s needs. "Before implementing the system, it was like we were only seeing pieces of the puzzle but never the big picture. Now we're able to identify where changes are needed in our contracts and drill down to the information we need to use our sales resources most effectively," says Yoshihiko Handa, Sales and Marketing Director at Kiku-Masamune.
The new system produces scheduled reports annually, quarterly, monthly, weekly, and daily that provide information on key indicators such as performance by retailer and profits by product and customer. Kiku-Masamune is able to use this information to determine which of its customers require attention and to expand its customer base. The new system also provides the company with information to better manage its manufacturing process. Kiku-Masamune can provide customers with “just in time” delivery of sake, which saves both Kiku-Masamune and its customers the expense of storing large inventories.
The system has been successful in providing Kiku-Masamune with a strong competitive advantage in the sake market. The company is working to train all 500+ employees on the new information and decision support system. The ultimate goal is to arm all employees with information to make the right decisions quickly and effectively, resulting in more profitable and efficient operations overall.
Business intelligence (BI) solutions such as the one designed for Kiku-Masamune are in increasing demand. In spite of a recent tough economic climate, the BI market experienced strong growth. Research company IDC estimates that the BI market will reach $7.5 billion in 2006. Business intelligence development projects show consistently high returns on investment and are increasingly recognized as key for business success.
BI systems are one of many types of information and decision support systems that are implemented to provide up-to-the-second information for decision making at all levels within a business. Information and decision support systems support decisions in all functional units within an organization: financial, manufacturing, marketing, human resources, and others.
Kiku-Masamune uses its new information and decision support system to price its premium sake astutely, to guide decision making, and help optimize sales opportunities. Effective information gathering and information sharing are clearly at the center of the company's new-found calm amid the storm of competition.
Consider the following:
• How can management information systems guide a company to achieve a competitive advantage within an industry?
• What characteristics of an information and decision support system make it valuable?
