Introduction
Depression can have a negative effect on both quality of
life and workplace functioning for employees.1,2 Studies
of workplace depression show that it is related to chronic
disease3 and disability,4–7 and that it impairs work capacity in
areas such as timekeeping,8–10 physical and psychological
ability to meet work demands,11 and job performance and
productivity.12 This can arise as a result of both presenteeism
(days when an employee is at work but performs poorly) and
absenteeism (sick leave and absence from work related to
depression and anxiety).
