A putative instance of horizontal gene transfer involves
adjacent, discrete KS, acy1 carrier protein, and NRPS domains
of the epothilone. Schmitt & Lumbsch (2009) found
an ancient horizontal transfer of PKS gene from an actinobacterial
source into ascomycete fungi. Zhou et al. (2011)
also found a transfer between 18S rDNA and KS domain sequences,
and a lateral gene transfer event was indicated.
The KS domain sequences in this study were analysed
with BLASTX. The definition of ITS rDNA does not coincide
with the analysis of KS domain sequences in the NCBI database.
For example, the strain DX-FOL1 is defined as a Penicillium
member by ITS rDNA, but one KS domain sequence of
the strain Gaeumannomyces amomi
has been detected in the
strain DX-FOL1. Thus, the proposed mechanism of horizon-
tal gene transfer in the evolution of biosynthetic gene was
suggested.
