for the wavelength of the light emitted during such quantum jumps. The atoms of different
elements have different energy levels (quantum states) and emit light of different wavelengths.
These wavelengths can be measured with extraordinary precision and are characteristic of the
atom that has emitted the light. It is thus possible to determine the elemental composition of any
substance by measuring the wavelengths of the light emitted by it. This technique is known as
spectroscopic analysis.
