5. Final remarks Near infrared spectroscopy (NIR),
as a popular PAT instrument was found to be used in industry in raw material identification
monitoring of reaction, fermentation, distillation, extraction, dry-
ing, blending, and characterization of the homogeneity of tablets
This has been due to its unrivalled combination of properties of NIR
being able to use fibre-optics for rapid data transmission,
accurate in measuring both low and high concentrations of solutions, robust
simple and suitable for harsh conditions. These properties made
NIR particularly suitable for industrial use.
However, NIR has found little use in industrial crystallization
precipitation and other processes handling slurries. The authors
are aware that some pharmaceutical companies attempted to apply
NIR to crystallization but failed because not only solution concen-
tration but also solid phase all affect the NIR spectra.
