Respondents reported the number of years since they were diagnosed with COPD, whether they were currently using oxygen for their COPD and whether they had ever used augmentation therapy. Three questions were used to assess exacerbations in the prior year. These questions assessed the number of times in the prior year the respondent had experienced an increase in symptoms of COPD that resulted in (1) a prescription for antibiotics, (2) a prescription for oral steroids, and (3) a hospital admission. A single variable was created to
indicate whether each respondent reported a zero for all three variables (i.e., no exacerbations), at least one exacerbation that resulted in antibiotics and/or steroids but no hospitalization, or at least one exacerbation that resulted in a hospitalization.
