Third food regime (1980-) - This is referred to as 'post-productivist' agriculture, which is less intense and more diversified than the preceding regime (see section below). It involves the search for quality and safety by consumers. The central importance of biotechnology, as well as the rise of flexible and small-scale niche agriculture in the core, characterizes this place. It corresponds with the neoliberal phase of the latest wave of globalization and more generally mirrors the rise of flexible accumulation. The rise of organic farming worldwide is one of the principal outcomes of this regime. The rise of counter-seasonal fruit and vegetable exports is also sometimes associated with this phase.
