A squint (strabismus), where one eye looks in a different direction to the other, is caused by an incorrect balance of the eye muscles. Squints are a common childhood condition and usually treated with glasses or an eye patch.
Babies with albinism and a squint may be given an eye patch to wear from six months of age, when their eyes are still developing. This is worn over the ‘good’ eye to encourage the eye with the squint to work harder.
