The Naga Fireball festival centers around the rising of mysterious fireballs, also called Mekong Lights, from the 250 km long Mekong River that separates Northern Thailand from Laos. Locals attribute this mysterious phenomenon to a waterborne serpent ‘the Naga’, which spits fireballs into the sky on the nights before and after the last day of the Buddhist Lenten season. Thousands of locals and tourists flock to the towns situated on the riverbank to witness the reddish, glowing balls that vary in size from small sparkles to the size of basketballs. Temple processions, fireworks display, riverside cruises and scrumptious food stalls also add to the highly charged atmosphere surrounding the Naga Fireball festival.
