Inhabitation Of Southern Corn Left Blight
(Bipolaris Maydis) By Chaetomium Globosum
Abstract
Corn is one of the most Important economical plant of Thailand. Southern corn left blight
cause by Bipolaris maydis is considered a major pathogen production in Thailand. This study
aimed to evaluate antagonistic fungus. Chaetomium globosum against B.maydis. This
experiment was carried out on PDA medium using the dual culture test. The result showed
that C.globosum has had significantability to inhibit the growth of B.maydis. The inhibition
percentage of radial growth of B.maydis on the PDA produced by C.globosum on day 3, day 7
and day 10 were 55.04%. 56.17% and 70.63%. respectively. On day 7 and day 10,C.globosum
and chemical agent (4% triforine) had no statically significant difference the inhibition
percentage of radial growth (P>0.01). Therefore. C.globosum had high efficiency to suppress
the growth of B.maydis which caused severe disease in corn leaf blight. This provides
potential for development of bio-product from C.globosum to be an alternative non-chemical
fungicides for farmer to use in corn plantation (Li et al., 2011).
Introduction
Corn is concider as a major economical in Thailand. However. corn is susceptible to many pathogen. Southern corn left blight cause by Bipolaris maydis is one of the disease that reduce yield. The symptoms is small tan lesion between viens that reduce photosynthetic area. Control and removal can be carried out by chemical method but is toxic to environment. Moreover. Biological control reduce expense and is not toxic to environment. Many species of fungi have been reported for control of B.maydis includeing C.globosum. Therefore. C.globoum have high efficiency to suppose the growth of B.maydis. This provides the potential for develop of bio-product from C.globosum to be an alternative non-chemical fungicides for farmers to use in corn plantation
Objective
To study the inhibition of antagonistic fungus. C.globosum against B.maydis.
Method
Studied morphology of B.maydis and C.globosum
Cultured B.maydis on PDA at 28 °C for 7 day
Cultured C.globosum on PdA at 30 °C for 7 day
Dual culture : - Negative control cultured only B.maydis
- Positive control cultured B.maydis against triforine
- Treatment cultured B.maydis against C.globosum
- Measured radius of B.maydis and percent of inhibition wea calculated from the following equation
- Analyzed using ANOVA followed by Duncan mutiple range test
Results
Morphological characteristics of B.maydis and C.globosum showed in figure 1 and figure 2.
B.maydis can be inhibited by C.globosum in table 1 and figure 3
Discussion & conclusion
C.globosum can significantly control the growth of B.maydis because C.globosum produce chactomium and glucanase (Shanthiya ct al. 2013). After 7 day of full life cycle. C.globosum increases its ability to inhibit B.maydis more than triforine
